Message post. I have just finished building my TT motor, and I have been putting some miles on it, and during the build I changed my mind about the Unorthodox UDP setup. I have built many domestic motors, including some supercharged and nitrous motors, and I couldn't believe people were bolting UD pulleys on their Z's, which are purely THAT...a pulley! THis replaces a stock harmonic balancer, which by design, is there to neutralize internal engine harmonics. With the use of a balancer, any harmful harmonics, especially those caused by detonation are absorbed and not passed on to the bearings, which cause them and possibly the crankshaft to fail. I know I can be hard on my motors, and especially with a car developing boost and creating several atmospheres of pressure, I just couldn't bring myself to bolt that bad-boy up and try it,,,so I bought a FISHER...I'd rather give up the 10-20 "claimed" hp for peace of mind, knowing that my engine isn't going to self-destruct the first time it's over-revved, or detonates on some cheap gas, or from too much boost. The only thing standing between the main cradle and the crankshaft during severe detonation are the little ass main bearings, and they take the full brunt of the hit without a balancer. I'm not taking anything away from anyone about using these UDP's, but I would highly advise all TT.netters to really look into how hard you guys all drive your cars, and what the long-range effects of not having a harmonic balancer are. Ash's point about NA vsTT is WAY valid!! Generally, the only other vehicle/ engine types that can go without the use of a true harmonic balancer are those running a belt-driven supercharger, as these motors just run a machined-bolt-on hub, but in this case the engine harmonics are distributed/ dissipated through the belt. So...back to the actual question ...Ash.. what are you running for your balancer...Stock, Fisher, UDP, or something you've created on your own? Just curious!!
